Buck is the main protagonist of The Call of the Wild. He is part Saint Bernard and part Scottish Shepherd. At first, Buck is a pampered dog living in the Santa Clara Valley in California. As the story progresses, Buck changes as he is forced to work as a sled dog in the harsh conditions of the Yukon.

Life In Santa Clara[]
Buck was living for 4 years in Santa Clara Valley at his owner's house, Judge Miller. He was the ruler of all houses and unlike other dogs, he was allowed to walk everywhere. He also watches over Alice and Mollie Millers, Judge Miller's daughters when they go for walk. Buck also was taken by Miller's sons, when they go in the hunt.
But one night, when Judge Miller was out of town, Manuel, gardener helper took Buck for a walk, but it turns out that Manuel was planning to sell him, to pay for his gambling debt. Buck first doesn't understand where Manuel brought him.
